Reuben Ng, a leading behavioral and data scientist, has made significant findings regarding the pervasive issue of ageism. His research has demonstrated that negative stereotypes of older adults are widespread. “Ageism is a global health crisis where older adults are viewed as a burden rather than a resource,” Ng wrote. Notably, Ng’s work has quantified the detrimental impact of these negative perceptions, estimating that they can reduce an individual’s lifespan by approximately eight years and substantially increase healthcare expenditures.
Further, his analysis of older TikTok influencers reveals a trend of actively challenging age stereotypes on social media. A landmark 2015 study by Ng also traced the historical evolution of age-related stereotypes over the past two centuries.
Ng’s impactful work and dedication to understanding and combating ageism have earned him recognition as one of the Next Avenue 2025 Advocates for Aging. This distinction highlights his expertise in ageism and social gerontology, positioning him as a key voice in shaping a more positive and accurate portrayal of older adults. His ongoing research into the impact of scams on both older and younger populations further underscores his commitment to addressing critical issues affecting these demographics.
