The Four Things “Superager” Centenarians Do

Dr. Sofiya Milman

Dr. Sofiya Milman (pictured above), a diabetes and metabolism endocrinologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has researched centenarians. How do they live so long? Her findings conclude that longevity isn’t solely determined by genetics or a rigid, ascetic lifestyle. Instead, she emphasizes four key factors to slow down aging and improve healthspan:

  • Regular exercise
  • A nutrient-dense diet
  • Stress reduction, and
  • Adequate sleep

While centenarians often exhibit typical habits, including occasional alcohol consumption or snacking, Milman stresses the importance of consistent healthy habits, particularly exercise, for the general population. This focus on daily, manageable practices underscores that even without “longevity genes,” individuals can significantly enhance their chances of living a longer, healthier life.

Beyond lifestyle, Milman’s research also suggests the potential for medical interventions to influence the biology of aging. She envisions a future where treatments, potentially developed within the next decade, could delay or even reverse age-related decline. This perspective shifts the conversation from inevitable aging to a proactive approach, where science and daily habits work in tandem to extend not just lifespan, but crucially, healthspan—the years lived free from chronic disease. By focusing on these four pillars, individuals can take meaningful steps towards a longer, more vibrant life, regardless of their genetic predisposition. Read more.
