September is National Preparedness Month—a time when FEMA, the American Red Cross, and many other organizations encourage all of us to take a closer look at how ready we are for the unexpected. This nationwide campaign began in 2004 after the events of 9/11 and is observed every September, with a special focus on September 30, National Preparedness Day. It’s about you, your family, and your community being ready for emergencies like hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or even sudden medical situations by securing property, stocking emergency kits, and having up-to-date medications and first aid, and a communication plan with close ones.
So why does this matter to you? Disasters are happening more often and can disrupt your daily life in big ways. But the good news is, a little preparation goes a long way. You can start by making a simple family plan—know where to go, who to call, and how to stay connected if phones or power go out. Building an emergency kit is another smart step. Think about what you’d need if you had to manage for at least three days: water, food, medications, important documents, and even supplies for pets. Your workplace, school, or community may also have resources you can tap into, so it’s worth checking.
It’s also recommended that every six months you conduct an audit of your emergency supplies at home, and expiration dates of medicines and canned or packaged goods. Make sure flashlights are working, that you have enough replacement batteries available, and that backup generators or power supplies are also in full working order. What needs to be repaired, replaced, replenished?
Preparedness doesn’t have to cost much—it’s really about being thoughtful and taking small steps. Every item you add to your kit, every conversation you have with loved ones, and every skill you learn, like CPR or first aid, makes you and your family safer. By getting involved now, you’ll have more peace of mind knowing that when the unexpected happens, you and your loved ones will be ready to handle it.
