Hello, November! Celebrations, Celestial Wonders, & Gratitude

Thankful Todays and Always

As autumn deepens and the holiday season begins, November brings countless reasons to pause, celebrate, and even gaze at the stars. For older adults, and for all of us, it’s a time to reflect, reconnect, and enjoy a little seasonal fun. Experts remind us that November is a perfect time to:

  • Nurture meaningful connections: Share stories, recipes, or cherished memories with family and friends.
  • Prioritize well-being: Plan balanced meals that blend comfort with nutrition, and enjoy a gentle walk or stretch after a feast.
  • Give thanks in simple ways: Try writing gratitude notes or creating a “memory jar” to capture joyful moments.

Thanksgiving reminds us that traditions evolve. Sometimes it’s about cooking together, other times it’s about trying new recipes or joining community celebrations. However you spend it, gratitude remains at the heart of November.

Upcoming National Days and Observances

This month is filled with opportunities to celebrate, reflect, and have fun:

  • Leonid Meteor Shower: Nov. 6–Dec. 2 (peak on Nov. 17). Look up between 1 a.m. and dawn for 10–15 meteors per hour under dark skies, visible across all 50 U.S. states and Canada!
  • National S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. Day: Saturday, Nov. 8. A great day to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math at any age.
  • National Fried Chicken Sandwich Day: Sunday, Nov. 9, because everyone deserves a little comfort food fun.
  • World Kindness Day: Thursday, Nov. 13. Reach out with a random act of kindness or reconnect with a friend or neighbor.
  • National Play Monopoly Day: Wednesday, Nov. 19. Dust off the board and enjoy some lighthearted competition.
  • Advent Begins: Sunday, Nov. 30. Welcome the holiday season with calm, reflection, and anticipation.

November is also Native American Heritage Month, honoring the history, culture, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples. Within it falls the National Day of Mourning (Thursday, Nov. 27), a time for reflection on the hardships faced by Native communities.
