If you live in the New York metro area, for a refreshing summer getaway without leaving New York City, all you need is to take an eight-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan to Governors Island. (Read below for whom and when the ride is free.) This oasis offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle with sweeping harbor views, shady walking paths, fascinating history, public art, and plenty of places to relax. For older adults, it’s ideal for anyone seeking a memorable day trip.
One of the island’s greatest attractions its simple atmosphere. Unlike most of New York City, there are no private cars, making it quieter, safer, and more enjoyable for strolling. Wide, paved pathways and abundant benches invite visitors to take their time, whether enjoying a leisurely walk, watching the boats pass by, or finding a shady spot beneath one of the island’s many mature trees.
History enthusiasts can explore two National Historic Landmarks: Castle Williams, a circular fort completed in 1811, and Fort Jay, whose roots date back to the Revolutionary War. Guided tours are often available during the summer, offering fascinating insights into the island’s military past and its role in defending New York Harbor.
Nature lovers won’t want to miss Hammock Grove, where dozens of colorful hammocks sway beneath the trees, providing a perfect place to read, nap, or simply enjoy the breeze. Nearby, the Hills offer gently winding paths leading to some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Brooklyn. Those who prefer a less strenuous visit can still enjoy beautiful waterfront scenery from many accessible areas throughout the island.
Art and culture are woven throughout Governors Island each summer. Visitors can discover outdoor sculptures, rotating art installations, and exhibitions by local artists. Seasonal performances, festivals, and cultural events add to the island’s lively atmosphere, making every visit a little different.
Dining: When it’s time for lunch or a snack, Governors Island offers a variety of casual cafés and food vendors serving everything from sandwiches and salads to international cuisine, ice cream, and refreshing beverages. Visitors are also welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy one of the many lawns or picnic tables scattered throughout the island.
Glamping: For those looking to turn a day trip into a unique overnight adventure, Governors Island is home to Collective Retreats, a luxury glamping experience unlike any other in New York City. Guests stay in beautifully furnished safari-style tents featuring comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. While it’s a splurge compared to traditional camping, glamping offers a relaxing escape with resort-style amenities just a short ferry ride from home.
Governors Island Ferry: And speaking of the ferry, the island is easy to reach by ferry from Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and select seasonal locations.
