Make a Tax-Free Gift from Your IRA Through a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution)
If you’re 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA to Presbyterian Senior Services (PSS) through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). It’s an easy way to support our mission while reducing your taxable income!
Benefits of a QCD:
- Avoid income taxes on transfers of up to $105,000 from your IRA.
- Satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you are 73 or older.
- Support PSS’s vital services for older adults and caregivers, while maximizing your tax savings.
- No need to itemize deductions to benefit.
How to Make a QCD Donation to PSS:
- Contact your IRA administrator, by email or postal letter, and request a direct transfer from your account to PSS.
- Provide them with our legal name, address, and Tax ID:
Presbyterian Senior Services (PSS)
2095 Broadway, Suite 409
New York, NY 10023
Tax ID: 13-2952276
- You can use this sample letter / email text to instruct your IRA administrator to make the QCD. Click here to download a PDF version OR click here to download a Word Document version.
Things to Know About QCDs:
As of 2024, the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) rules have some important features and updates. Here are the key points:
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 70½ years old to make a QCD.
- Annual Limit: The maximum annual amount you can donate through QCDs is $105,000 per individual. This is an increase from previous years due to inflation adjustments.
- Eligible Accounts: QCDs can be made from traditional IRAs, inherited IRAs, SEP IRAs, and SIMPLE IRAs (if they’re not receiving ongoing contributions).
- Direct Transfer: The funds must be transferred directly from your IRA to the qualified charity. You cannot receive the money first and then donate it.
- Qualified Charities: The donation must be made to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization. Private foundations and donor-advised funds are generally not eligible.
- Counting Towards RMDs: QCDs can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
- No Double-Dipping: You cannot claim a charitable deduction for a QCD on your tax return, as the distribution is already tax-free.
- Reporting: While QCDs are reported on your tax return, they are not included in your adjusted gross income.
- Deadline: QCDs must be completed by December 31 of the tax year to count for that year.
Always consult with a tax professional or financial advisor for personalized advice, as individual situations may vary, and rules can change.
