Paul Margolis: Analog Photography Artist & Champion

Paul Margolis: Analog Photography Artist & Champion

A photojournalist for his entire career, Paul Margolis has been immersed in all aspects of photography, including the transition from analog (think film and dark rooms) to digital. He has photographed in the U.S., India and Israel, and his work has been exhibited across the country and internationally. Making a transition to “unretirement,” he continues to lecture about photography and exhibit internationally. But with all his digital and analog experience, Margolis focuses on his specialty—using Leica cameras from the ‘60s and the ‘80s to document life, developing black-and-white film in a dark room, favoring b&w’s “historical record” quality.

Earlier in his career, Margolis documented the shad fishermen of the Hudson River, the small Jewish communities of Cuba and Ireland, and Jewish poverty in New York City life. More recently, his projects have included photographing the interactions of senior citizens and their pets, and commuters and crew on the Staten Island Ferry. During the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, he has documented the “new normal” of people going about their lives in masks, of protests, of other signs of the “new normal,” and how the outbreak has affected society. Join us to hear his perspective and see examples of his work, which is found in museums, historical archives, and private collections. Gain an understanding of the marvels of working in analog, while standing out against the backdrop of a predominantly digital photography age.
