A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a special charitable account that lets a person, family, or business set aside money for giving to nonprofits in the future, while getting an immediate tax deduction when they put money into the account. The donor works with a DAF “sponsor” which is a public charity that manages the fund, invests the money, and handles the paperwork—examples include community foundations or national financial institutions with special charitable entities under them (like Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, etc.). To make a gift through a DAF, the donor tells their DAF sponsor to send a grant from their account to the nonprofit they want to support; the sponsor then disburses the funds, following the donor’s wishes.
