The Alberta L. Alston House was named after Alberta Lois Alston, who was a devout Christian, mentor, a community leader in New Jersey and St. Albans (Queens) as well as a ruling elder of the Presbyterian Church of St. Albans. In 1977 Ms. Alston was the first African American female moderator of the Presbytery of New York City.
Through Rev. James Grant’s endeavors in senior housing, the Alberta L. Alston House was completed in the fall of 1984. The building is sponsored by Presbyterian Senior Services, with financing by The Department of Housing & Urban Development.
Alberta L. Alston House has 151 apartments, 14 of which are wheelchair accessible for mobility-impaired tenants from ages 18 and over; one apartment for the resident superintendent and 136 apartments are for the elderly aged 62 and over. Each apartment consists of one bedroom, living room, bathroom and a full kitchen area. The apartments are rented to seniors who are independently living on a very low income, which the rent is subsidized by the federal government (The Department of Housing & Urban Development). Activities and programs are offered throughout the year, providing the opportunity for residents to interact and enrich their lives through new experiences. Activities such as arts & crafts, exercise, bingo, video snack theatre, luncheon/theatre day trips, and show events are planned several times during the year.
The PSS Alberta L. Alston House is located betweenChristie Avenue and Lewis Avenue on 99th Street, across the street from the Q38 bus stop. Take the R or the M train to Woodhaven Boulevard/Queens Mall, then take the Q38 bus bus towards Christie Avenue and 99th Street.
